Mr Arthur Askey

Background to the Case

Mr Askey was referred by his legal aid funded lawyer for a psychological assessment and report to assist in sentencing. Mr Askey had been found guilty on two counts of Attempted Rape, and two counts of Rape, and his lawyer requested that an assessment and report for the court describe Mr Askey’s general psychological profile, comment on his state of mind at the time of the offence, and provide an opinion about his current psychological health.

Mr Askey presented as a middle-aged man of average height and solid stature. He was polite, cooperative and articulate throughout the 2½ hour assessment interview, elaborating spontaneously, and he did not refuse to answer any questions directed at him. Mr Askey did not appear to be in distress, and I did not observe any indication that he was experiencing symptoms of psychosis, or any other major mental illness such as anxiety or depression. My observations were corroborated by Mr Askey’ self-report, he told me that he had no pressing concerns, and had not sought the assistance of any mental health professionals or counselling support during his imprisonment.
